Abuja, Nigeria, 2nd July 2026 – Sierra Leone’s President Dr. Julius Maada Bio touched down in Abuja yesterday to attend the historic commissioning of the new ECOWAS Headquarters, a landmark complex hailed as the “Eye of West Africa.”
President Bio, who currently chairs the Authority of Heads of State and Government of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), arrived with a high-powered delegation led by Foreign Affairs Minister Timothy Musa Kabba. His presence underscores Sierra Leone’s active leadership in regional affairs and his pivotal role in steering ECOWAS through a period of institutional reform and integration.
President Bio is expected to deliver the keynote address and officially cut the ribbon to open the state-of-the-art facility. The programme will also feature remarks from China’s Foreign Minister, recognizing Beijing’s financial and technical support in constructing the headquarters, alongside addresses by ECOWAS Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray and Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
The new headquarters consolidates the ECOWAS Commission, Community Parliament, and Community Court of Justice under one roof for the first time, ending decades of scattered operations across Abuja. The complex boasts an 800-seat conference hall, modern interpretation-equipped meeting rooms, archives, a medical clinic, and parking for more than 700 vehicles.
