Freetown, 9th June, 2026 — The South Carolina House of Representatives in the United States has honoured Madam Hawa Sally Samai, Executive Secretary of Sierra Leone’s Independent Commission for Peace and National Cohesion (ICPNC), for her outstanding contributions to peacebuilding, democratic governance, and the protection of vulnerable communities.
The recognition came through a special resolution adopted on June 8, 2026, introduced by Representative Rosalyn D. Henderson‑Myers at the State House in Columbia, South Carolina. The resolution commended Madam Samai for her decades of service in advancing peace, justice, inclusion, and social development both in Sierra Leone and internationally.
As head of the ICPNC, Madam Samai has spearheaded dialogue, mediation, and reconciliation efforts across Sierra Leone, working closely with communities to strengthen social cohesion. The resolution also acknowledged her role in civil society and her commitment to building resilient, inclusive communities.
“This honour reflects the growing international recognition of Sierra Leoneans who continue to play vital roles in promoting peace, democracy, and social cohesion,” the citation noted.
Madam Samai’s achievement is being celebrated as an inspiration to peacebuilders across Sierra Leone, reaffirming the importance of dialogue, inclusion, and collective action in building peaceful and prosperous societies.
