Freetown, 4th June, 2026 — The Sierra Leone Civil Aviation Authority (SLCAA) has rolled out enhanced Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) screening and prevention measures at Freetown International Airport (FIA), following reports of the virus’s re‑emergence in the DRC

In a public notice, Director General Musayeroh Barrie assured passengers and aviation staff that the Authority is taking proactive steps to safeguard public health, prevent cross‑border transmission, and align Sierra Leone’s aviation sector with international health and safety standards.

The measures include: Enhanced screening for passengers arriving and departing through FIA, stricter monitoring of health documentation and travel records, collaboration with health authorities to ensure rapid response to suspected cases and compliance with WHO guidelines for aviation health safety.

Barrie emphasized that the measures are part of the Government of Sierra Leone’s broader preparedness strategy, reinforcing vigilance against Ebola while protecting both travellers and frontline aviation personnel.

The announcement comes as regional health agencies warn of renewed risks of Ebola outbreaks, underscoring the importance of airport‑level interventions to contain potential cross‑border spread.
