Dakar, Senegal, 17th April 2026- The Sierra Leone Embassy in Dakar has unveiled a new Biometric Consular Identification Card system for Sierra Leoneans living in Senegal, marking a major step in digitizing consular services and strengthening national documentation abroad.
The new card, valid for three years, comes with enhanced security features designed to prevent forgery and ensure credibility. Embassy officials say the initiative replaces the old paper-based consular cards, which were vulnerable to misuse and often found in the hands of non-Sierra Leoneans.
“This step has made the new consular card credible, with security features that can be scanned and verified. It also allows us to properly account for Sierra Leoneans resident in Senegal,” explained Ms. Evelyn Tanty Akakpo, Acting Head of Chancery, during the launch ceremony.
The biometric system aligns Sierra Leone’s consular services with international standards, matching similar systems already in use by other embassies. Sierra Leoneans welcomed the development, praising the dignity and pride the new card carries.
Applicants can receive their biometric consular card within three working days after completing the interview and application process. Community members say the initiative not only enhances security but also strengthens their identity and confidence as Sierra Leoneans abroad.
