Freetown, 17th March, 2026 – The newly approved National Returning Officer and Chairman of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha, has paid a courtesy visit to Inspector General of Police (IGP) William Fayia Sellu at the Senior Police Officers’ Mess in Kingtom, Freetown.
During the meeting, Mr. Alpha expressed gratitude to the Sierra Leone Police for its continued support in safeguarding electoral processes. He noted that his visit was not only to reaffirm confidence in his new appointment but also to strengthen collaboration with the police ahead of upcoming electoral activities.
“As the substantive head responsible for electoral operations, I am here to seek the continued support of the Sierra Leone Police in terms of security and collaboration,” Mr. Alpha said. “Elections are paramount, but without adequate security, they cannot succeed. A secure environment creates the enabling space for all stakeholders to operate freely.”
Mr. Alpha disclosed that the Commission is currently developing a five‑year strategic plan and key policies aligned with Tripartite Committee recommendations, with support from international partners. He assured the IGP of his commitment to delivering free, fair, and transparent elections, citing his experience in overseeing more than 45 Paramount Chieftaincy elections across the country.
In response, IGP Sellu congratulated Mr. Alpha on his appointment and pledged the Sierra Leone Police’s unwavering support to the ECSL. He emphasized professionalism and integrity as guiding principles, adding that regional and divisional commanders have been directed to maintain close collaboration with ECSL officials to ensure adequate security nationwide.
The meeting underscored the importance of sustained partnership between the ECSL and the Sierra Leone Police in promoting peaceful, credible, and well‑secured elections across the country.
