Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, 16th February, 2026–  Sierra Leone’s President Julius Maada Bio has declared a 300-day period of activism as a presidential initiative to accelerate delivery efforts in reducing maternal mortality. He made the announcement on the sidelines of the 39th Ordinary Session of the African Union Assembly, extending an invitation to African leaders and partners to join Sierra Leone in the campaign.

President Bio emphasized that the initiative is designed to close critical gaps in maternal health services.

“The urgency is intentional. Too many maternal deaths continue to occur because known solutions are not applied consistently. The purpose of the 300 Days of Activism is to close that gap through discipline, accountability, and sustained political focus,” he said.

The activism period, set to begin on March 1, 2026, will prioritize continuous care throughout pregnancy, safe deliveries, swift responses to complications, and thorough postnatal follow-up.

“Maternal mortality is not reduced by statements alone; it is reduced by daily decisions and systems that are held accountable for results,” President Bio added.

He pledged that progress will be closely monitored, results shared openly, and success measured by the number of lives saved.

The initiative is expected to galvanize national and regional efforts, with Sierra Leone positioning itself as a leader in maternal health advocacy across Africa.
