Freetown, 22nd January 2026 — The Sierra Leone People’s Party (SLPP) headquarters is set to benefit from a major renewable energy boost, following the announcement by Hon. Dr. Kandeh Yumkella of a 30-kilowatt Solar Photovoltaic (PV) system with battery storage.
The project, expected to be completed within two weeks, will provide a sustainable and uninterrupted electricity supply to the party’s national offices in Freetown.
The announcement was made at a gathering attended by SLPP National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa, senior party executives, stakeholders, and supporters. Dr. Yumkella explained that the initiative was inspired by appeals from the party’s National Secretary General, Hon. Paran Tarawally, who had underscored the need for reliable power to enhance efficiency at the headquarters.
“Light is life, and without reliable power, an office cannot function effectively,” Dr. Yumkella said. “On behalf of my family, I am donating this 30-kilowatt solar system with battery storage to support the smooth and efficient running of the party’s headquarters. As a family, we will continue to support the SLPP.”
National Chairman Sir Jimmy Batilo Songa expressed gratitude on behalf of President Julius Maada Bio, the party’s National Leader, as well as the executive and membership. He described the donation as a gesture that would not only strengthen the leadership’s operations but also bring “light, joy, and excitement to the ordinary SLPP member.”
“Today, you have brought joy to the SLPP, and for that, we say thank you,” Chairman Songa remarked, assuring that the solar system would be used responsibly and for its intended purpose.
Hon. Paran Tarawally, who had earlier received the project materials, hailed the initiative as both timely and transformative. He noted that the solar installation would resolve the longstanding challenge of unstable electricity at the headquarters and urged other stakeholders to emulate Dr. Yumkella’s example as the party prepares for the 2028 general elections.
The solar PV project is being seen as more than just an energy solution. It represents a commitment to clean, sustainable power, institutional strengthening, and forward-looking leadership. For the SLPP, it underscores a resolve to align political vision with practical action, ensuring that the party’s structures remain resilient and future-ready.
