Freetown, 3rd November 2025- The Independent Radio Network (IRN) has officially launched “Pipul en Pawa,” a dynamic new radio programme designed to amplify citizen voices and strengthen public accountability across Sierra Leone. Developed in partnership with BBC Media Action and funded by the European Union, the programme will begin airing nationwide on Monday, 3 November 2025, at 7 p.m. daily.

“Pipul en Pawa” is more than a broadcast, it’s a platform for civic engagement, designed to bring government closer to the people by tackling governance issues head-on. Through radio and digital channels, the programme will connect communities with decision-makers, encouraging dialogue, transparency, and inclusive participation.

At the launch event, Edward Kargbo, Country Director of BBC Media Action, highlighted the initiative’s roots in the MEDIA Project, which aims to empower media institutions and strengthen community radio stations in line with Sierra Leone’s National Action Plan. “This is about giving communities the tools to hold power to account,” he said.

IRN’s National Coordinator, Ransford Wright, described the launch as a pivotal moment: “We’re moving from planning to action. Pipul en Pawa is ready to air, and it’s already generating momentum across our network.” While twelve stations are formally part of the project, Wright noted that additional IRN member stations have voluntarily joined the effort, underscoring the programme’s national appeal.

Executive Producer Umaru Fofanah confirmed that five episodes are already in the can, praising the production team’s commitment under tight deadlines. “This programme positions IRN not just as an election network, but as a permanent fixture in Sierra Leone’s democratic landscape,” he said.

Radio remains the most accessible medium in Sierra Leone, and IRN plans to complement its broadcasts with short video clips and online content to reach both traditional and digital audiences.

Board Chair Andrew Kromah called the programme a timely response to growing public demand for transparency and participation. “Pipul en Pawa reflects our mission to give voice to the people. It’s a people-centered programme, and we’re proud to deliver it with the support of BBC Media Action and the EU.”

Dr. Fredline M’Cormack-Hale, President of the 50/50 Group Sierra Leone, delivered the official launch statement, urging greater radio access for women and praising the programme’s alignment with Afro barometer’s work in elevating citizen perspectives. “Let us commit to building a culture of participation and reflection,” she said.
