Freetown, 29th October 2025-  In a move to advance gender inclusion within Sierra Leone’s security sector, UN Women, the Republic of Sierra Leone Armed Forces (RSLAF), and the Elsie Initiative Fund have jointly launched an all-female military drivers training programme for 75 female officers. The launch ceremony, held at Triple Canopy, Murray Town Barracks, marks the largest female driver capacity-building initiative in RSLAF history.

The programme aims to equip female personnel with critical operational mobility skills, enhancing their readiness for peacekeeping deployments and national service. Commanding Officer of the Transport Regiment, Lt. Col. Saio Marrah, opened the event by emphasizing the strategic importance of expanding women’s roles in military logistics and field operations.

Madam Setcheme Mongbo, Head of UN Women Sierra Leone, hailed the initiative as a life-saving investment in women’s capabilities. “These 75 officers are not just learning to drive; they are preparing to save lives,” she said, underscoring the link between mobility training and battlefield survival.

UN Resident Coordinator Madam Seraphine Wakana described the programme as a breakthrough in dismantling systemic barriers against women in uniform. “You are not just learning to drive, you are driving change,” she told the trainees.

Chief of Defence Staff, Lt. Gen. A. I. Bangura, officially launched the programme, affirming RSLAF’s commitment to gender equity. “Competence and courage distinguish no gender. Today, you are steering the Armed Forces toward a more modern and inclusive future,” he declared.

Representing the Ministry of Gender and Children’s Affairs, Bamie Sesay reiterated the government’s support for the Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment (GEWE) Act and pledged continued efforts to boost female participation in national security and peacekeeping roles.

The event concluded with military demonstrations, a group photo session, and interactions with the pioneering trainees, who will undergo a rigorous 15-week training in driving and operational readiness.
