Kenema, Sierra Leone, 10th October 2025-History was made today as Elizabeth Wuyah Sowa was elected the first female bishop of the United Brethren in Christ (UBC) Sierra Leone Conference, following a closely contested vote held at the Henretta School Compound in Kenema.
Bishop-elect Sowa secured 30 votes, narrowly defeating her contender, Reverend Juliana Satta Walker, who received 25 votes. The election drew a total of 55 delegates, marking a significant moment for gender representation within the church’s leadership.
Her victory not only breaks a long-standing gender barrier in the UBC Sierra Leone Conference but also signals a growing shift toward inclusivity and progressive leadership within the denomination.
Elizabeth Wuyah Sowa will now assume spiritual and administrative oversight of the Conference, becoming a trailblazer for women in ministry across the country.
The election was observed by church leaders, members, and community representatives, with many praising the peaceful and transparent process.
