Freetown, October 8, 2025– As a way of deepening public engagement and strengthening national revenue mobilization, the National Revenue Authority (NRA) has opened its doors to the executive of the Sierra Leone Reporters Union (SLRU). The courtesy visit, held at Rensis House on Gloucester Street, marks a significant step toward institutional collaboration between the country’s tax authority and its media practitioners.
Commissioner General of the NRA, Mrs. Jeneba J. Bangura, welcomed the SLRU delegation and expressed optimism about the potential impact of a media-partnership approach to tax education. “Reporters are essential allies in shaping public understanding of tax reforms and compliance,” she said, emphasizing the NRA’s commitment to transparency and inclusive communication.
SLRU President Yeanor Kabia, speaking on behalf of the union’s executive, underscored the importance of aligning media efforts with national development goals. She noted that the union represents over 600 registered reporters across Sierra Leone and announced plans to host its first Annual General Meeting (AGM) in November, its first in 21 years. The AGM will also see the adoption of a new constitution aimed at modernizing the union’s operations.
Kabia pledged the union’s support in amplifying public awareness around tax compliance and revenue collection, stating, “We are ready to work with the NRA to ensure citizens understand their tax obligations and the benefits of a robust revenue system.”
Sahr A.K. Lamin, Manager of the NRA’s Public Affairs and Tax Education Unit, revealed that a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) is being developed to formalize information-sharing between the NRA and media outlets. The SOP, he said, was a key recommendation from a recent stakeholder meeting with journalists and aims to streamline communication, improve access to data, and ensure consistent messaging on tax-related matters.
The meeting concluded with a shared commitment to build a more informed public and a more responsive revenue system, anchored by collaboration, transparency, and strategic media engagement.
