Freetown, 12th December 2025: The Sierra Leone Teachers Union (SLTU) has issued a reminder to the Ministry of Basic and Senior Secondary Education regarding the payment of outstanding school fees subsidies, warning that delays could create another backlog as schools prepare to close for the Christmas holiday.

In a letter addressed to the Minister of Basic and Senior Secondary Education, the Union recalled that one of the resolutions reached during the last teachers’ strike was the settlement of the 2024/2025 backlog of fee subsidies and the payment of the first term subsidies for the 2025/2026 academic year.

However, according to the Union, the first-term subsidies have still not been paid despite assurances from both the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Finance. With schools scheduled to close in the next two weeks, the Union fears that the delay will result in yet another backlog, further straining the education system.

The SLTU has called for the Ministry’s urgent intervention to honour its commitments and prevent disruptions in the management of schools across the country.
