Freetown, 5th April 2026- The Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) has condemned what it describes as a disturbing incident involving police officers and prominent media trainer and lawyer, Paul Kamara Esq., at the Adonkia Police Station in the Western Rural District.
According to Mr. Kamara, the alleged assault occurred on the evening of April 4, 2026, while he was at the station in connection with investigations into the death of his colleague, Augustine Sensie Bangura. He claims he was forcibly restrained, dragged, and pepper-sprayed by police officers following an interaction at the premises.
SLAJ, in a statement issued on April 5, said the allegations raise “serious concerns about the use of force, professional conduct, and respect for the rights and dignity of citizens.” The Association stressed that while it awaits the Sierra Leone Police’s official account, the gravity of the claims warrants urgent action.
The journalists’ body has called on the leadership of the Sierra Leone Police to launch a swift, impartial investigation and ensure that any officers found culpable are held accountable under the law. SLAJ also urged the Independent Police Complaints Board and other oversight institutions to closely monitor the process to guarantee transparency and justice.
In its statement, SLAJ emphasized that respect for the rule of law and accountability must remain the cornerstone of policing in a democratic society. “Incidents of alleged abuse, if left unaddressed, risk eroding public confidence in law enforcement institutions,” the Association warned.
SLAJ further called for the protection of Mr. Kamara and any potential witnesses as investigations unfold, pledging to follow developments closely and support efforts aimed at ensuring justice and accountability.
