Abuja, Nigeria, 9th February 2026- Sierra Leone has been unanimously endorsed by the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) for a second mandate (2026–2027) on the African Union Peace and Security Council (AUPSC), following an extraordinary mediation and security council meeting of ECOWAS Ministers.
The endorsement comes as recognition of Sierra Leone’s “outstanding leadership” during its current tenure on both the United Nations Security Council (2024–2025) and the AUPSC (2024–2025).
Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, Timothy Musa Kabba, who presided over the ECOWAS meeting, described the decision as a significant vote of confidence in Sierra Leone’s diplomacy.
“This unanimous endorsement is testament to Sierra Leone’s impactful leadership in advancing peace and security across the continent,” Kabba said. “I wish to thank my colleagues and the entire ECOWAS community for this abiding trust in our country’s leadership.”
Kabba also expressed gratitude to President Julius Maada Bio, who currently serves as Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government.
“I extend my deepest appreciation to His Excellency President Bio for his guidance and leadership, which continue to shape Sierra Leone’s foreign policy and strengthen our voice in multilateral institutions,” he noted.
The Foreign Minister further praised the efforts of Sierra Leone’s diplomatic corps, particularly ambassadors and their teams in Abuja and Addis Ababa.
“Our cherished ambassadors and their staff have been tireless in driving the diplomatic aspirations of President Bio through quality representation. Their work has been crucial in securing this endorsement,” Kabba added.
Sierra Leone’s renewed mandate at the AUPSC is expected to bolster its role in continental peacebuilding, conflict prevention, and security cooperation, reinforcing the country’s growing reputation as a leader in international diplomacy.
