Bissau, 1st December, 2025 – President Julius Maada Bio has held talks with the military leadership of Guinea-Bissau, underscoring the Economic Community of West African States’ (ECOWAS) determination to restore constitutional order in the country following last week’s coup.
Bio, who serves as Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government of ECOWAS, said his engagement was guided by the communique of the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council.
“Pursuant to the communique of the Extraordinary Session of the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council, I engaged in a constructive discussion with the military leadership of Guinea-Bissau. As Chairperson of the Authority of Heads of State and Government, I reaffirmed ECOWAS’s unwavering commitment to restore constitutional order,” President Bio stated.
The visit comes in the wake of the arrest of President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and the announcement by military officers that they had taken “total control” of Guinea-Bissau, establishing a High Military Command to oversee national security and public order.
ECOWAS has consistently emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on unconstitutional changes of government, and Bio’s intervention signals the regional bloc’s intent to pursue dialogue while pressing for a swift return to democratic governance.
The discussions mark a critical step in ECOWAS’s mediation efforts, as the bloc seeks to balance regional stability with the urgent need to safeguard democratic institutions in Guinea-Bissau.
