Freetown, 2 March 2026 — The Sierra Leone Police has announced that beginning Monday, March 9, it will intensify enforcement of road safety regulations, targeting motorbike riders, passengers, and motorists nationwide.

The crackdown will focus on two key measures: the mandatory wearing of crash helmets by all motorbike riders and passengers, and the compulsory use of seatbelts by front-seat occupants in moving vehicles.

Authorities say the first week of March (1–7) has been dedicated to public education and awareness, with officers issuing verbal warnings to non-compliant individuals. The aim, according to police, is to encourage voluntary compliance and highlight the life-saving importance of helmets and seatbelts.

From March 9, however, violators will face arrest, fines, or prosecution in accordance with the law. “This notice serves as an official warning,” the statement read, urging riders and motorists to comply or risk the full force of enforcement.

The initiative, carried out in collaboration with partners, is part of ongoing efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities across Sierra Leone.
