Freetown, 27th February 2026- Sierra Leone’s Parliament has confirmed Edmond Sylvester Alpha as Chief Electoral Commissioner (CEC) of the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL). Alpha, who had been serving in an acting capacity, will now oversee preparations for the 2028 elections.
The decision followed consultations with political parties, with 12 of 14 registered parties endorsing the appointment. The main opposition boycotted the process after their 48-hour ultimatum for government to rescind the nomination and conclude constitutional amendments expired.
Meanwhile, Truth Media understands that APC leadership has been meeting with the U.S. Embassy, the EU Ambassador, the British High Commissioner, and the ECOWAS Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace, and Security as part of ongoing consultations around the appointment and broader electoral reforms.
Alpha’s confirmation marks a significant step in shaping Sierra Leone’s electoral future, though political divisions remain evident.
