Freetown, 7th April 2026 – Kissy Ferry Terminal has claimed top spot at the National Coastal Unity Boat Race 2026, edging out Susan’s Bay and Moa Wharf in a spirited contest that brought Sierra Leone’s coastal communities together.
The event, organized by the GEED Foundation in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, unfolded at Lumley/Aberdeen Beach in Freetown. It marked a milestone in efforts to promote national unity, youth empowerment, and tourism development.
The colorful ceremony drew government officials, development partners, youth groups, and members of the public, who lined the coastline to witness the spectacle.
Dr. Ekundayo Walton Gilpin, Chief Executive Officer of the GEED Foundation, described the race as more than a sporting competition. “It is a platform for fostering peace, collaboration, and national cohesion among coastal communities,” he said.
Tourism and Cultural Affairs Minister Nabeela Farida Tunis highlighted the importance of harnessing Sierra Leone’s rich coastal resources to boost tourism and create economic opportunities for young people. She noted that the initiative aligns with the government’s vision of positioning Sierra Leone as a leading tourism destination in West Africa, while preserving cultural heritage and strengthening community ties.
The race brought together participants from across coastal districts, showcasing talent, encouraging teamwork, and celebrating shared identity. Beyond competition, the initiative promoted peace and national cohesion, engaged and empowered young people, highlighted the tourism potential of Sierra Leone’s beaches, and strengthened partnerships across sectors.
With Kissy Ferry Terminal taking the top spot, the National Coastal Unity Boat Race has set a precedent for blending sport, culture, and economic opportunity reinforcing the message that Sierra Leone’s coastline is not only a natural treasure but also a driver of unity and development.
