Freetown, 10th November 2025- The Government of Sierra Leone has approved revised conditions of service for the Electoral Commission for Sierra Leone (ECSL), setting the stage for a more energized and accountable electoral workforce ahead of the 2028 general elections.
This has prompted a formal letter of gratitude from Acting Chief Electoral Commissioner Edmond Sylvester Alpha, addressed to Mr. Barba B. Fortune, Secretary to the President. In the letter, Alpha praised His Excellency the President for his “timely intervention,” noting that the approval has “restored the confidence and morale of staff,” and serves as a vital source of motivation.
The revised conditions of service are part of a broader restructuring effort recommended by the Public Sector Reform Unit (PSRU) and the Tripartite Committee, aimed at strengthening ECSL’s operational capacity and aligning its internal systems with national legal reforms and fiscal discipline.
With the 2028 elections on the horizon, the ECSL’s leadership has pledged full compliance with electoral legal reforms and prudent management practices. The Commission’s renewed commitment comes at a time when public trust in democratic institutions is paramount, and the need for a professional, well-supported electoral body has never been greater.
The Commission’s promise of “effective management and compliance” with electoral reforms and fiscal discipline may sound routine, but in a political climate where independence is sacred, such cordiality raises eyebrows. After all, when the referee starts thanking the captain of one team for new boots, it makes everyone take notice and pay closer attention.
