Freetown, November 18, 2025 — Civil society organizations and media institutions have strongly condemned recent comments made by Hon. Lahai Marah, the All People’s Congress (APC) District Chairman for Falaba, describing his rhetoric as reckless and a direct threat to Sierra Leone’s fragile peace and national security.
Marah, a former Member of Parliament, reportedly told a gathering in Falaba District on November 15 that he was prepared to “fight,” “resist,” and even engage private military actors, while suggesting the APC had the capacity to challenge state security institutions.
In a joint statement issued Tuesday, CSOs and media groups said such remarks were “inflammatory and deeply irresponsible,” warning that they undermine democratic consolidation and erode public trust. “A statement of this nature not only endangers citizens but also risks destabilizing the country,” the release noted.
The groups called on the APC leadership to publicly distance itself from Marah’s comments, take disciplinary action, and put safeguards in place to prevent similar incidents.
They commended the Political Parties Regulation Commission (PPRC) for its swift intervention, including disciplinary measures against the APC, and urged the Commission to remain firm, impartial, and consistent in applying the law to avoid further escalation.
Civil society leaders stressed that political actors must model restraint and respect for the rule of law, rather than fueling division and fear. “At a time when Sierra Leone is working to strengthen democratic institutions and rebuild public confidence, leaders must embrace civility and patriotism in their public statements,” the statement added.
The organizations reaffirmed their commitment to promoting peace and democratic governance, insisting that political competition in Sierra Leone must never be equated with threats, intimidation, or incitement to violence.
