Freetown, 11th December 2025- The story of Chief Alhaji Umaru Monorma Bah is one of resilience, vision, and service. Orphaned at a young age, he rose from humble beginnings to become a respected entrepreneur, community leader, and philanthropist whose legacy continues to shape lives across Sierra Leone.
As a teenager, Monorma began farming on his own before working for others, transporting cattle on foot across long distances. His determination and honesty earned him recognition as a trusted businessman. With the guidance of his uncle, Officer Mohamed Pateh Bah, he invested his inheritance into ventures that created opportunities not only for himself but for his wider community.
When he became Chief of the Fulbhe community in Koindu, Monorma distinguished himself through humility and fairness. He helped resolve disputes between Fullah merchants and the Kissi host community, fostering harmony in a town where trade and cultural ties often intersect.
Though he never had formal schooling, Monorma championed education, encouraging his children to pursue professional careers and supporting institutions that would benefit generations to come.
His impact is visible across Koindu. He worked with the Fullah community to build the science block at Kissi Bendu Secondary School, spearheaded the construction of the Koindu Islamic Center, ensured a reliable water supply for the town, and oversaw the building of a modern hospital.
Beyond Koindu, his leadership was recognized nationally. He was appointed Justice of the Peace by late President Siaka Stevens and, in 2018, awarded Sierra Leone’s highest civil honor, the Order of the Rokel, by President Julius Maada Bio.
Perhaps his most significant achievement was helping secure Koindu’s status as an international market town, opening doors for cross-border trade and cementing its role as a hub of commerce in the eastern region.
Chief Monorma’s journey from orphaned youth to decorated leader reflects the power of resilience, hard work, and selfless service. For the Fullah community, the Muslim faith, and Sierra Leone at large, his life remains a source of inspiration, reminding future generations that true leadership is measured not by wealth, but by the lives uplifted along the way.
