Freetown, 5th November 2025-  Chief Minister Dr. David Moinina Sengeh has convened a high-level meeting with government leaders, diplomatic missions, and security agencies to strengthen international coordination in Sierra Leone’s fight against drug trafficking.

The meeting, held in response to directives from President Julius Maada Bio, brought together representatives from the Sierra Leone Ports and Harbour Authority, Civil Aviation, the Sierra Leone Police, and the Office of National Security, alongside a cross-section of embassies and high commissions.

“This was a productive engagement,” the Chief Minister said in a statement. “We are acting on the President’s instructions to intensify our efforts against drug trafficking, and today’s meeting reaffirmed our collective commitment.”

According to the Chief Minister, the Ports and Harbour Authority presented data on the origins of containers intercepted with drug-related and suspected substances. The Civil Aviation Authority shared updates on airport-level interventions aimed at deterring trafficking, while the Police and ONS outlined ongoing investigations and enforcement actions.

“There are several ongoing efforts by various government agencies and partners to make it very expensive and nearly impossible for smugglers to use our official ports of entry and exit for drugs,” Dr. Sengeh emphasized. “This is what we’ve been doing, and we will continue to intensify our efforts.”

He further disclosed that specific substances including acetone, tramadol, and herbal marshmallow will be subject to tighter import controls as part of the government’s crackdown.

The meeting marks a significant step in Sierra Leone’s evolving strategy to combat narcotics, with emphasis on data-driven enforcement, inter-agency collaboration, and international support.
