Freetown, 3rd March 2026 – The opposition All Peoples Congress (APC) has firmly restated its decision to withdraw the participation of its elected officials from Parliament and Local Councils across Sierra Leone, insisting it will not return until Mr. Edmond Sylvester Alpha vacates the office of Chief Electoral Commissioner.

The announcement came after an APC delegation attended a meeting convened by the National Peace and Cohesion Commission (NPCC) at the Brookfields Hotel in Freetown. The meeting, which brought together the Attorney General, representatives of ECOWAS, and international partners, reviewed progress on implementing the Tripartite Committee Recommendations under the Agreement for National Unity.

During deliberations, the APC accused the government of disregarding agreed electoral reforms, pointing to Alpha’s appointment as Chief Electoral Commissioner as a direct violation of the spirit and sequencing of the reform commitments. The party argued that Alpha’s association with the contested 2023 elections undermines public confidence in the Electoral Commission and threatens the credibility of future polls.

In a statement signed by APC Secretary-General Lansana Dumbuya, Esq., the party emphasized that its stance is not driven by partisan interest but by a commitment to electoral integrity, constitutional governance, and democratic legitimacy.

“The APC remains ready to re-engage constructively in governance once meaningful steps are taken to restore confidence in the electoral reform process and uphold the commitments contained in the Agreement for National Unity,” the statement read.

The party also reiterated its commitment to peaceful, lawful, and democratic means in defending what it described as the sovereign will of the people of Sierra Leone.
