Freetown, 31st December 2025- Sierra Leone’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Michael Imran Kanu, has been recognized internationally as Second Runner‑Up for UN Diplomat of the Year 2025, an accolade that highlights his growing influence on the global stage and Sierra Leone’s rising profile in multilateral diplomacy.
The award, conferred by PassBlue, an independent UN‑focused news outlet, celebrates diplomats who have demonstrated courage, leadership, and principled engagement in some of the world’s most pressing crises. Ambassador Kanu’s recognition places Sierra Leone alongside leading voices in international affairs, affirming the country’s contribution to peace, security, and global governance.
Ambassador Kanu expressed gratitude for the honor, dedicating it to the leadership of President Julius Maada Bio, the steadfast support of Foreign Minister Tim Kabba, and the tireless work of the staff at Sierra Leone’s Mission to the UN.
“I am grateful for the recognition of Sierra Leone’s contribution, advanced through the leadership of President Bio, the support of our Foreign Ministry, and the dedication of the Mission staff, which I have had the privilege and high honour to lead,” he said.
The overall UN Person of the Year was awarded to Philippe Lazzarini, Commissioner‑General of UNRWA, for his tireless advocacy on behalf of Palestinian refugees amid the Gaza war. Amar Bendjama, Algeria’s Permanent Representative, was named UN Diplomat of the Year, while Slovenia’s Samuel Žbogar took the First Runner‑Up position.
By securing the Second Runner‑Up spot, Ambassador Kanu joins this distinguished group, underscoring Sierra Leone’s active role in shaping UN debates and defending principles of peace, dignity, and human rights.
