Freetown, 12th January 2026- The TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations 2025 has proven to be one of the most dramatic and historic editions of the tournament since its inception on February 10, 1957. Now in its 35th edition, AFCON continues to be the ultimate stage where nations showcase footballing brilliance and battle for the coveted title of Champion of Africa.
This year’s prize money has seen a significant increase: Winner: $7,000,000, Runner-up: $4,000,000, Semi-finalists: $2,500,000 and Quarter-finalists: $1,300,000
The tournament, featuring 24 teams, is being hosted for the first time during the Christmas and New Year period, adding a festive atmosphere to the competition. Fans have witnessed dazzling performances from global stars including Mohamed Salah, Victor Osimhen, Achraf Hakimi, Brahim Diaz, and Sadio Mané.
Since kick-off on December 21, 2025, more than 110 goals have been scored. As the semi-finals approach, the competition has delivered thrilling encounters:
- Nigeria dominated from the group stage and defeated Algeria 2–0.
- Morocco, the host nation, stunned five-time champions Cameroon 2–0.
- Senegal edged past Mali 1–0 with resilience and power.
- Egypt, seven-time champions, eliminated defending champions Côte d’Ivoire in a tense, electrifying clash.
Standout Performers
Individual brilliance has been a hallmark of AFCON 2025: Ademola Lookman (Nigeria/Atalanta) – Highest-rated player so far with 8.45. Mohamed Salah (Egypt/Liverpool) – Close behind with 8.37. Brahim Diaz (Morocco/Real Madrid) – Top scorer with 5 goals, scoring in every match. Victor Osimhen (Nigeria/Napoli) – Second-highest scorer with 4 goals. Lookman also leads in assists (4), followed by Sadio Mané (Senegal) with 3 assists.
Discipline has also shaped the tournament, with 8 red cards and over 60 yellow cards issued. Notably, Yves Bissouma (Mali/Tottenham Hotspur) was sent off in stoppage time against Senegal, while Ugandan goalkeeper Salim Jamal Magoola also saw red.
AFCON remains a celebration of African culture. Morocco has showcased its rich traditions through music, attire, food, and architecture. Players and officials have arrived in culturally inspired outfits, while fans from across the 54 CAF nations bring chants, dances, and vibrant displays of heritage to the stadiums.
With the semi-finals set, the battle for Africa’s bragging rights intensifies. Champions, legends, and heroes will be crowned on January 18, 2026, at the Prince Moulay Abdullah Stadium in Rabat, Morocco.
