Freetown, 16th September, 2026 –Port Loko District has recorded zero maternal deaths over the past 100 days, marking a breakthrough under the ongoing 300 Days of Activism campaign for Triple Zero deaths.
Health Minister Dr. Austin Demby announced the milestone during the unveiling of US$2 million worth of medicines, hospital beds, and reproductive health supplies at the National Medical Supplies Agency warehouse in Freetown.
Launched by President Julius Maada Bio, the 300 Days of Activism targets: zero preventable maternal deaths, zero preventable child deaths and zero “zero-dose” children
The initiative is designed to correct operational failures that have historically placed women at risk during pregnancy and childbirth, while ensuring children receive essential vaccinations and care.
Maternal health has long posed challenges in Port Loko, but the district’s recent success demonstrates the impact of targeted interventions. Nationally, Sierra Leone has reduced maternal deaths by over 70% in the last decade, according to Ministry of Health data released in March 2026.
Dr. Demby described the Port Loko achievement as proof that strengthening maternal and child health systems can deliver measurable results. “This is a clear signal that with the right investments, training, and accountability, preventable deaths can be eliminated,” he said.
The government reaffirmed its commitment to protecting healthcare services for women, children, and families, pledging continued investment in reproductive health, emergency obstetric care, and community outreach.
With the 300 Days of Activism campaign, Sierra Leone’s goals are clear: to ensure that no woman dies giving life, no child dies needlessly, and no child is left unvaccinated.
