Freetown, 3rd August, 2026 The Board of Directors of the Sierra Leone Bar Association (SLBA) has announced the convening of an Extraordinary General Meeting (EGM) to address the governance crisis following the disruption of the Association’s Annual General Meeting (AGM).
The AGM, scheduled for July 31 to August 1, was halted after police intervened at the Freetown International Conference Centre, preventing members from completing the Association’s constitutional business, including the election of a new Board of Directors.
In a notice issued on August 1, the SLBA Board said its mandate expires on August 18, 2026, and stressed that it will have no constitutional authority to continue in office beyond that date. To safeguard the Association’s governance and continuity, the Board has called members to an EGM on Thursday, August 6, 2026, at the D’Bim D’Bam Multipurpose Complex, Wellington Street, Freetown, at 2:00 p.m.
The EGM will consider several key resolutions, including:
- Acknowledging the expiration of the current Board on August 18.
- Appointing a Caretaker Body approved by members to oversee the Association’s affairs.
- Defining the Caretaker Body’s mandate, which will include preserving assets and records, ensuring uninterrupted administration, convening the AGM, and supervising elections.
- Determining the duration of the Caretaker Body, which will cease once a new Board is elected and installed.
The Board emphasized that the EGM is necessary to uphold the Association’s Memorandum and Articles of Association, democratic principles, and the rule of law. It described the meeting as a critical step to restore confidence in the SLBA’s governance and ensure a transparent transition to new leadership.
